New York Times journalist Andrea Elliott began following a child from a homeless family in New York more than a decade ago, learning in depth about the challenges she (and her family) faced in trying to escape poverty. That project resulted in the 2021 book Invisible Child: Poverty, Survival & Hope in an American City, which won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction.
Invisible Child was chosen as this year’s book selection for Cleveland’s One Community Reads project, a project of Cuyahoga County’s library systems, Playhouse Square and the City Club to get people reading and talking about the same book. Elliott herself will now be coming to town to do a reading at Playhouse Square’s Mimi Ohio theatre.
