Wed 5/7 @ noon
For more than three decades, accordion player Walt Mahovlic, who has both Hungarian and Croatian ancestry, has led the ensemble Harmonia, promoting of Eastern European folk music in northeast Ohio. The group uses authentic folk instruments to blend various traditional styles from that corner of the world: Gypsy, Hungarian, Romanian, Croatian, Ukrainian, Slovak and Carpatho-Rusyn. Many of their tunes will be familiar to those who grew up in one of these traditions, while others will have the elusive familiarity of a wisp of a tune overheard in passing. They combine the lively, dance-oriented tunes of peasants with a mournful, nostalgic songs of those often displaced from their homes.
Today, members of the ensemble will perform selections from the klezmer section of their repertoire at Trinity Cathedral’s as part of its Brownbag free concert series. All are welcome!
