South Indian Classical Players join Jamey Haddad Quartet at the BOP STOP

Sat 4/8 @ 8PM

Veteran Cleveland percussionist Jamey Haddad has spent decades building a network of fellow musicians that span jazz, pop and global music.

The Cleveland native, whose interest in international rhythms is lifelong, left Cleveland to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston (where he later became a professor), then moved to New York where he built a flourishing career, playing on hundreds of albums and playing with Paul Simon’s touring band for decades.

After 30 years on the East Coast, he moved back to Cleveland 20 years ago to join the Oberlin Conservatory faculty teaching percussion and improvisation. His interest in diverse collaborations is as strong as ever. This week his quartet of outstanding local jazz players — in addition to himself, there’s trumpeter Tommy Lehman guitarist Dan Bruce and bassist Kip Reed — will be welcoming a trio of musicians who are performing at the South Indian Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival, the largest Indian classical music festival taking place outside India. They include L Ramakrishnan on violin, B Shree Sundarkumar on kanjira, a tambourine-like percussion instrument, and M Balamurali Krishna on vocals and mridanham (a South Indian drum).

The show takes place at the BOP STOP. For tickets go here. The show will also be live streamed on the BOP STOP’s Facebook page.
