Cyclists Address Food Insecurity with Cranksgiving in May

Sat 5/10 @ 11AM

Every year, a week before Thanksgiving, Bike Cleveland hosts an event called Cranksgiving, where bicyclists assemble, get lists of food to purchase and fan out to area groceries, picking up items and returning them to a central location to be donated to food banks and pantries for those in need.

But with word of food cuts coming from both the Ohio legislature and the federal government — those tax cuts for billionaires won’t fund themselves so hungry kids will have to do it — they’ve decided to hold Cranksgiving in May.

Want to take part? Gather at the Lakewood Truck Park for registration, coffee and donuts at 11am, get a map of local grocery stores and a brief program at 11:30. Then head out to purchase food — cyclists typically spend about $15 but that’s up to you (you can also bring non-perishable items with you). You just have to carry everything on your bike, in a bag, panier or trailer, no cheating! Return to Lakewood Bike Park between 1:30-1:45pm; there’s a closing program and group photo at 2pm.

Everything collected with be donated to the Lakewood Community Services Center. You can also organize your own food drive among your friends or co-workers and make a food or cash donation at Beat Cycles, the Bike Spot or Spin Bike Shop during regular business hours.
