Many illustrious string quartets have histories that stretch back decades, often involving member changes as musicians move on to other positions in other countries.

The Calder Quartet is a relative youngster at 16, with all its founding members still intact. That and its name, a tribute to playful sculpture Alexander Calder, are clues that this is no staid, conservative group. And while it certainly performs all the classics it’s also noted for its work with contemporary composers, and it’s played with rock bands like the National and the Airborne Toxic Event as well.

The group will be back in Cleveland to play a series of shows, a sort of “residency,” at Cleveland’s Transformer Station., focusing in newer and more obscure compositions. It kicks off withPéter Eötvös’ 1992 Korrespondenz, Béla Bartók 1939 String Quartet No. 6, and Ben Johnston’s 1973 String Quartet No. 4 (“Amazing Grace”).

Tickets are $20, or $18 for Cleveland Museum of Art members.
