Jay Ungar and Molly Mason have been kicking around the acoustic folk music scene for a long, long time. In fact, Ungar’s roots go back to the legendary New York folk scene of the ’60s that produced a parade of legendary folkies. And he was a member of oddball late ’60s/early ’70s band Cat Mother & the All-Night Newsboys, known for having a hit with a “good old rock ’n’ roll” medley track.
He met and married and Mason in the ’70s and together, they’ve become mainstays of folk festivals and clubs across the country and run music camps at their Ashokan Center in the Catskills to pass along their knowledge of American roots music of the past 200 years. They did have one brief moment of fame which has become their signature: Ungar’s tune “Ashokan Farewell” made its way into the Ken Burns documentary The Civil War.
They’ll kick off a packed weekend for Peninsula’s Voices in the Valley series at the G.A. R. Hall. Ticket are $22 in advance, $27 at the door if any are left — and there might not be. So buy ahead of time if you want to go.
