Cleveland’s Harmonia Plays Eastern European Music at Akron Civic Theatre Concert

Fri 1/25 @ 8PM

The Akron Civic Theatre’s intimate cabaret series (musicians and audience on the stage together) presents World Music @ the Civic with Cleveland-based Harmonia.

The ensemble is led by accordion player Walt Mahovlich, who has been a promoter of Eastern European folk music in northeast Ohio for decades. (he himself is of Croatian and Hungarian descent). The group uses authentic folk instruments to blend various traditional styles from that corner of the world: Gypsy, Hungarian, Romanian, Croatian, Ukrainian, Slovak and Carpatho-Rusyn. Many of their tunes will be familiar to those who grew up in one of these traditions, while others will have the elusive familiarity of a wisp of a tune overheard in passing. They combine the lively, dance-oriented tunes of peasants with a mournful, nostalgic songs of those often displaced from their homes.

The concert is free.
