Akron Symphony Rolls Out Musical Firepower for Haydn’s “The Creation”

Sat 4/30 @ 8PM

The Akron Symphony Orchestra will be joined on stage at EJ Thomas Hall by the  Akron Symphony Chorus, combining forces for a performance of Joseph Haydn’s powerful oratorio, The Creation. Written in the late 1790s, it attempts to do nothing less than describe in sound the creation of the world as told in the book of Genesis. Naturally, it deploys massive vocal and instrumental resources to do so, including four vocal soloists: soprano Nola Richardson, tenor Timothy Culver, alto Chris Albanese and bass Timothy Jones.

The program also feature music from the opera Taras Bulba by 19th-century Ukrainian composer Mykola Vitaliyovych Lysenko, considered the foundation of a distinctly Ukrainian, non-Russian musical tradition. His 1885 “Prayer for Ukraine,” a spiritual anthem in its churches, was recently performed on Saturday Night Live.

Christopher Wilkins conducts the program; Chris Albanese is the chorus director.
