It’s time for moms and grandmothers to dress up their little girls in their velvet and tulle party dresses and shiny patent leather shows, and take them to that magic world known as The Nutcracker.
This Christmas staple, set to now ultra-familiar Tchaikovsky music, originated in the late 19th century. And while there are numerous updated versions, most still set the opening act in 19th century European parlor where a family is gathered for a holiday party.
But it’s the second of the two acts where most of the enchanting dancing takes place, when a toy nutcracker comes to life as a young prince and takes young Marie away to the Land of the Sweets. What little girl in the audience isn’t dreaming of being the Sugarplum Fairy someday?
The Pennsylvania Ballet joins forces with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchesta Children’s Chorus to perform their version at PlayhouseSquare’s State Theater for seven performances. Tickets are $15-$99.
