Fun In The Sun

Enjoy the glorious weather. Because if you know our region, you know a change is coming.

The tomatoes are at their peak, and you can get a taste at Countryside, Howe Meadow and Northside markets this weekend. Then the teaching kitchen at the new Dave’s supermarket in Midtown offers free cooking classes to help you make healthy recipes from all that fresh food getting ripe in the sun. Once that sun sets, the outdoor courtyard at Worthington Yards is the site for CINE-EX, featuring animated and experimental short films, with a dance performance by Hope Schultz.

Change is good, just ask Pete & Debbie Gulyas, celebrating 10 happy years at Blue Arrow Records, helping to shepherd in the vinyl revival, while vinyl pressing plant Gotta Groove Records also turns 10. Tropidelic’s Freakstomp festival happens in a new location in Butler, Ohio, and Ingenuity’s Ignite! series offers tips for freelancers. Cedar Fairmount’s SummerFEST returns with even more opportunities for fun. The Opioid Awareness Music Festival launches in Kent, where Downtown Kent’s ice cream social is back for the 16th year, and you can revel in the night sky at Lake Metroparks Super Star Party.

The CoolCLE Show our weekly podcast, features an interview with Gretchen Dupps of Cleveland Angels, supporting foster parents and children, plus new music from Cleveland’s Ricky Ray Band and Blue Radio from Cuyahoga Falls. How much fun can you handle? –Thomas Mulready

Cleveland Angels supports local foster children and their careers, combatting the sobering statistics associated with the future prospects of children in care. This week, we’re talking to Gretchen Dupps, president & executive director of the charity, about the work they do, how to support it & get involved, as well as the details of how to get tickets to its two upcoming fundraisers.

And we have brand new music from Cleveland’s Rick Ray Band and a track from Cuyahoga Falls’ Blue Radio.

Pete and Debbie Gulyas have been mainstays on Waterloo Road in North Collinwood for a decade. More than ten years ago, they bought a building in the then-nascent arts district, and when they couldn’t find a tenant, they opened a record store, just as vinyl records were taking off.

Now they’ve become a destination for vinyl junkies & collectors from all over the country, with their stock of 12,000 mostly vintage albums, singles, magazines & music-related collectibles. They’ve also got an indie record label with five acts they promote and then there’s that cat rescue thing they’ve also become known for. Stop in for some records and stay to pet one of the resident felines.

Learn how to use nature to improve your backyard at the Cleveland Metroparks Backyard Nature Bash on Sat 8/17 from noon-4pm at the Watershed Stewardship Center in West Creek Reservation, 2277 West Ridgewood Drive, Parma.

This free, family-fun event, sponsored by ACME Fresh Food Market, features live music, wagon rides, a native plant sale and expert tips on how to install rain gardens that attract pollinators. Interactive nature stations throughout the event offer a chance to get close to butterflies and other native wildlife. The event is in partnership with the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District and West Creek Conservancy. Plan your visit at ClevelandMetroparks.com.

The Cedar Fairmount SummerFEST in Cleveland Heights has always been a low-key, neighborhood family-friendly affair, and it still is – but with enhancements this year. With new partners, the festival is offering a lot more opportunities for creative engagement.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is bringing its Studio Go mobile van to engage people in combining movement and DayGlo paint, while The Music Settlement is not only hosting performers but also giving people a chance to try out musical instruments (and maybe sign up for some classes?) And Praxis Fiber Workshop will be leading hands-on dying instruction. There’s food, vendors, historical tours, crafts and of course, face painting. Sat 8/10.

C. Ellen Connally, an avid student of American history, recalls how, until 1936, black voters were solidly in the GOP camp. But after the New Deal, they joined other Americans in reelecting FDR in a landslide. By 1960, there was no looking back, especially when Republican presidential contender Richard Nixon never returned Daddy King MLK Sr’s calls to get his son out of a Georgia jail – and the Kennedys made it happen.

“That’s why it was amazing to learn in 2016 that Daddy King’s granddaughter and MLK Jr.’s niece, Alveda King (pictured), endorsed Donald Trump for President,” says Connally. When Trump recently attacked congressman Elijah Cummings, King defended him against those pointing out his obvious racism. “Years ago, there was still some nobility to being black and a member of the Republican party,” says Connally. “That was a different generation. They didn’t have to sell their souls.”

On Monday, August 5th a historic groundbreaking took place on East 85th Street at Chester Avenue in Ward 7/Hough. Known for the beautiful, spacious homes that have been built over the last quarter century in the near east side community where my wife and I elected to reside almost 20 years ago, new home construction in Hough is set to take off again…

* A Nation of Mourners Crass politicians know that all of the vigils serve as a safety valve of sorts, allowing citizens to dissipate their anger and mute the call for real change. We have to demand that our political leaders stop with the coded hate speech that pushes fragile people over the edge…
