Transitions

We’re constantly in transition. So embrace it now, before it’s gone.

If you are what you eat, you’ll enjoy our latest weekly CoolCLE PODCAST featuring a talk with Cleveland nutrition consultant, yoga teacher and blogger Jenn Harte, who is hosting a group cleanse. Cleveland Seed Bank is holding its annual Seed Swap at St. Patrick’s Church in Ohio City, preparing for the next growing season.

Bob Navis has been changing lives in our town for nearly 40 years, and he is celebrating a transition to his next challenge. Kids looking for their next challenge have it made this week: from a Family Fireside Night at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes, to a Princess & Superhero weekend at the ice rink at Akron’s Lock 3, to CMNH’s Pizza & PJs party.

View the changing seasons from the comfort of an authentic vintage railroad car with Dinner on the Train on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. The band Rush broke here in Cleveland, and now each of them is entering a new phase, according to singer/bassist Geddy Lee, who CoolCleveland interviewed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Change is good. –Thomas Mulready

This week, we are tackling the topic of healthy diets with Cleveland nutrition consultant, yoga teacher and blogger Jenn Harte. She’s in the middle of leading a group cleanse that she’s running from Cleveland Yoga in Beachwood; she talks us through why nutrition is becoming increasingly important for today’s way of life.

We also have new music from Cleveland’s Soulus and Somewhat Silas.

The Cleveland Seed Bank is part of an international movement to preserve seed varieties, ensure plant diversity and promote social justice by making seeds available to all. The seeds they save are available at local libraries where anyone can “check them out” and at its annual Seed Swap events, such as the one Sat 1/26 at St. Patrick’s Church in Ohio City. All are welcome whether they have seeds to share or not.

“If anybody has any seeds that they’ve been passing on from generation to generation in their family or if there are any seeds they’ve regionally adapted – which means they’ve been saving them for years – we can protect and continue to grow them out year after year to make them regionally adaptive, says CSB program coordinator Kimmy Lessman.

It’s been a time of change for Near West Theatre. Founder Stephanie Morrison Hrbek retired last year, after shepherding the theater’s new state-of-the-art facility in Gordon Square into being. Now artistic director Bob Navis Jr, who has been with NWT for nearly 40 years, is moving on to a well-earned retirement.

There’ll be a celebration of his contributions at the theater with performances and testimonials. Navis tells us how he got involved with NWT and what it meant to him. “It was a shining light in a lot of darkness,” he says. “Near West became art, family, friends. I had my own personal needs taken care of in a lot of ways there. It’s like that for so many people who walk in the door. It’s a very unique and rather rare place.” Sun 1/27.

Dobama Theatre’s annual kids’ playwriting festival takes place in June and submissions are due Fri 3/1. If your kid thinks she needs some help tweaking her submission, she should come to one (or both) of Lake Erie Ink’s youth playwriting workshops, Sat 1/26 or Sat 2/2.

“There’s a special connection between Rush and Cleveland,” says Geddy Lee about how Cleveland radio broke the band Rush in the United States. “When you hear yourself on the radio and you’re 19 years old and you’re in a new country, it’s a marvelous feeling.”

Rush bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson were in Cleveland at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for Rush Fan Day, with many questioning the future of the band after drummer Neil Peart’s announcement that he would cease performing and recording with Rush. “There’s no plans to reform (the band) at this point,” says Lee. “The future is a wide open question mark. I’m really enjoying not knowing where I’m headed.”
