Eight Local Musicians Called Octo-Jazz Perform “West Coast Cool” at the BOP STOP

Thu 1/31 @ 7PM

Drummer Ricky Exton calls himself a “rhythmpainter.” He has been a vital part of the area music scene since he was a teenager in the 1990s, playing everything from rock and roll to jazz.

He started playing around with drums when he was about 8 and later took lessons for six years from legendary drum instructor Bobby McKee. After high school, he earned a scholarship to Tri-C’s noted Jazz Studies program and then went on to earn his degree at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He currently plays with Ernie Krivda’s Fat Tuesday Big Band and Lou Armagno’s “Sinatra Selects” act.

Jazz is the focus of his eight-piece group Octo-Jazz, featuring five horns in addition to the piano/bass/drums rhythm section. He describes it as a “fun yet sophisticated group paying homage to some of the great jazz arrangers including but not limited to the West Coast or ‘Cool’ style of jazz.”

The ensemble performs at the BOP STOP; admission is $15.
