Chinese classical pianist Lang Lang, who is 41, is in that phase of his career where his talent and reputation have established him as an international star.
Like many classical musicians he was a prodigy, starting piano lessons at 3 and doing his first public performance at 5. He began winning major competitions before his was in his teens and moved to the U.S. at age 15 to make opportunities more accessible. He’s known as a somewhat flamboyant and crowd-pleasing performer with a solid musical base.
He’ll be back in Cleveland at Severance Music Center this week to perform Camille Saint-Saëns’s much-loved Piano Concerto No. 2. The programs also feature Hector Berloiz’s Symphonie fantastique. (The Fridsay morning concert features only the Berlioz piece.) The Cleveland Orchestra’s music director Franz Welser-Möst conducts all the performances.
