Take a Hike Cleveland kicks off its 2026 season with a series of May tours called “Behind Closed Doors.” These 90-minute tours explore the transformation of iconic downtown Cleveland buildings, now restored as apartment buildings.  You’ll learn when they were built, how they were originally used, how and well they fell into decline and how they were preserved. You’ll get to go inside to see model apartments and community spaces and see how they’ve been repurposed. Yes, it’s a partnership with a real estate group so there might be a little bit of a sales pitch if you’re so inclined!

On Tuesdays May 5, 12 and 19, walkers will take the Superior Route from Superior Avenue to East 9th to Euclid Avenue. They’ll check out the 1913 Leader Building, originally home to a local newspaper; the East Ohio Building from 1958; the 1908 Pope + Halle Building, once home to one of Cleveland’s most elegant department stores; and the 1922 Hanna Buolding, former an office building.

On Thursdays, May 7, 14 and 21, walk from Euclid Avenue to Prospect to Public Square, to look at the former William Taylor & Son Department Store, built in 1913; the 1898 Electric Building, formerly the national headquarters for the United Church of Christ,  Terminal Tower, finished in 1930; and the 1958 Illuminating Building.
