The artists Massinissa Selmani wis from Algiers and now lives in France and Algeria where the tension between the countries and their people has informed his art, which includes drawing, printmaking and video.
The School of Art Collection and Galleries at Kent State University will be opening show called Ombre: Works by Massinissa Selmani, at the Downtown KSU Gallery on Friday, March 20 with a free, public reception. It will feature several of his works that focus on the relationship between an object and its shadow.
“Through modest compositions shaped as much by void as by images, Selmani reveals the psychological weight of daily living,” says the show’s statement. “Buildings, figures and objects from his past mingle with snippets from the present, and both are collaged into surreal scenes that often find their compositions in the balance of light and dark.”
The show will be on view through Saturday May 30. There will be a virtual conversation between the artist and curator on Friday April 17 @ noon.
