Heights Arts’ “Ungallery” Show Features a Half Dozen Distinctive Creators

Nate Puppets

Fri 3/20 @ 5-8PM

Two new shows open at Heights Arts this week, and the show in its main gallery, called Ungallery, aims to surprise people with work that is not necessarily seen in art galleries.

The work of puppet maker Nate Puppets would certainly be at the top of the list. He’s known for his acerbic take on traditional puppetry, very far from the Mr. Rogers Neighborhood type of thing. Comic artist Jake Kelly is well known for the flyers he’s designed for local music club, while Leo Covault creates three-dimensional pieces with fashion paper dolls arranged to tell folktales visually. Multidisciplinary artist Leigh Brooklyn demonstrates her welding technique will sculptures of hand-painted grenades, and Mary Defer contributes experimental photos involving burning part of negatives and photographing them on a light table. And designer Marcus Schafes makes laser-cut wood works to cross the boundary between functional and fine art.

On view in the spotlight will be Jeneen Hobby’s photos taken during a two-week expedition to Antarctica and Greenland.

The shows open with a free public reception on Friday March 20 and will be on view through May 17.
