Cleveland ensemble Alla Boara was founded in 2020 by one of northeast Ohio’s many rising young jazz musicians, drummer/percussionist Anthony Taddeo, inspired by Alan Lomax’s 1954 Smithsonian Folkways field recordings of nearly extinct regional Italian folk tunes. Using those recording as a baseline, he enlisted a group of other outstanding young area musicians to give the music a contemporary twist, drawing on jazz, rock and world music. They’ve now put out two albums with a third in the works, and have been branching out beyond the greater Cleveland area.

Last December, Alla Boara played a concert at Trinity Cathedral in downtown Cleveland with a holiday theme. They’re now returning to Trinity for a non-holiday show described as “another rousing evening of Italian folk music and friendship.” Their concerts feature not only topnotch musicianship but storytelling that reveals the songs’ backgrounds and even audience participation opportunities.
