The City of Akron Honors Dr. King with Speeches and Gospel Music

Sun 1/18 @ 4PM

You can gripe about “DEI” all you want — but the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr has been to open a lot of minds of all races to the values of diversity inclusion and equity i.e. an equal shot for everyone.

So there’ll be a lot of celebrating when the federal holiday happens honoring his birthday on Monday (Trump hasn’t canceled it — yet) with activities happening throughout the weekend. One of those is being hosted by the City of Akron and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Day Coalition at the First Congregational Church of Akron UCC, an event that has been taking place since 1979.

The theme for 2026 is “Keeping Dr. King’s dream alive through advocacy and community growth.” Pastor Vincent Peterson of Providence Baptist Church will share his thoughts on Dr. King’s legacy, with Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Akron NAACP President Judi Hill also speaking, young people reciting from Dr. King’s speeches and a community gospel choir directed by Donell Phipps providing uplifting music. The event is free and open to all.
