Improvisational Musicians Share New Sounds at BOP STOP

Sun 1/11 @ 7-9PM

Cleveland musicians Paul Stranahan and Tim Mirth are both adventurous players who are always looking for new ways to stretch their musical muscles. Stranahan is a percussionist who has created beats with a variety of instruments in a variety of ensembles, while guitarist Mirth’s musical projects have included everything from metal to jazz.

The duo has been collaborating for more than 15 years and has been playing as Night Terrors for a while, but for their upcoming show at the BOP STOP, they’re going by Stranahan Mirth. Under that name, Stranahan has swapped his gongs for marimba and Mirth has traded his electric guitar for acoustic, and they funnel all their influences — jazz, classical, avant-garde, metal — into original compositions. They’ve also recorded a new album, 5 Pieces for Marimba and Guitar, to be released shortly. You can expect to hear some of that at the BOP STOP show.

They say that this album “unlike many collaborations of this kind, embraces improvisation. While rooted in a classical presentation, the music also explores spontaneity and time-specific variation.” The show will also be livestreamed on BOP STOP’s YouTube page.
