Akron Symphony Mixes Old and New at Its Next Concert

The Akron Symphony’s upcoming program reflects the increased proclivity of established orchestras to blend traditional repertoire with pieces outside the canon — often by underrepresented (Black and female, usually) composers — contemporary commissioned and pieces that cross genre boundaries.

Their upcoming concert at EJ Thomas Hall reflects pretty much all of that. There’s Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, one of the most played pieces in the classical repertoire. Then there’s jazz great Duke Ellington’s 1974 Three Black Kings, featuring noted local jazz saxophone player Chris Coles, and Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. And opening the evening is Clearing of Snow, a debut pieces written by University of Akron student Sarah Hegenderfer. The piece is described as “a reflective orchestral work capturing the subtle transformation from winter to spring that mirrors the natural unfolding of snow melting under the gentle glow of an evening sun, offering listeners a sense of renewal and awakening.”
