Gordon Square Is Ground Zero for Cleveland's Dia de Muertos Celebration

Sat 11/1 @ 11AM-10PM

Once again, artist Héctor Castellanos Lara is heading up the team of artists and performers presenting the area’s big Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration taking place on the Cleveland Public Theatre Campus and throughout the Gordon Square neighborhood. It’s a daylong celebration of the ancestor-honoring holiday, which began in Mexico.

The grounds, church and parish hall will be filled with color and activity starting at 11am with a “graveyard” ofrendas (altars to friends and relatives who have passed) outside and more in the church building, art and crafts vendors and food stations in the parking lot, and performers in the Parish Hall. Among the performers are Dueto Maraville, Patricia Bussert and the Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center Danza Group.

At 3:30, the procession down Detroit Avenue begins, led by grand Marshall Antonio Parente and Cleveland’s Burlesque Queen Bella Sin as Catrina, the traditional Day of the Dead skeleton figure. Detroit Avenue will be packed with observers as the parade wends its way to the Craciun Berry Funeral Home and back, with many onlookers elaborately costumed and masked as well.
