Wallace Coleman Brings the Blues to Trinity Cathedral

Wed 9/17 @ noon

Trinity Cathedral across from the Cleveland State campus has been hosting its noon Brownbag concerts for going on five decades. Held every other Wednesday in the fall and spring, they offer free music for downtown workers and visitors who are invited to bring their lunch and hang out.

Typically, they’ve presented classical music by both professional musician and students, but this series offers even more diversity. This week, the music will be provided by the Wallace Coleman Band, featuring blues harmonica player Wallace Coleman. Now in his late 80s, Coleman was swept up to Cleveland from Tennessee during The Great Migration, becoming part of the local blues community. With an active scene and touring circuit, Coleman absorbed diverse blues styles including traditional Delta blues and electrified Chicago blues. After retiring from Hough Bakeries at age 51, Coleman joined the band of Cleveland blues legend Robert Lockwood Jr full-time, the only harmonica player to perform with him. He left Lockwood (who died in 2006 at the age of 91) in 1997 to launch his own band. Since then, he’s toured the world, played at major blues festivals in Europe and the U.S., released several albums and remained a beloved part of the area blues scene.
