Fri 9/19-Sun 9/21
If you’re an enthusiastic birth watcher, or if you’ve simply bird-curious, you’ll want to head out to Mentor Headlands Beach State Park for the annual Headlands Birding Festival: a weekend of avian activities including talks by experts, guided walks, field trips and even a boat trip out on Lake Erie. The event coincides with the fall migration of birds from this region to parts south.
They claim the Mentor Headlands/Mentor Marsh region is home to the greatest number and types of migratory birds with 352 documented. How many do you think you can spot?
Give it a go. Knowledgeable birders will be leading walkers to some of the area’s hotspots for the winged travelers, while others will do presentations on bird identification and habits. Artist/naturalist/author Julie Zickefoose, who lives and works on an 80-acre wildlife sanctuary in Whipple, Ohio on southeastern Ohio and was a commentator on All Things Considered for five years, will deliver a keynote address on Friday evening. She’ll tell the story of her journey to becoming a writer and illustrator and share why she’s so passionate about birds.
