Sat 3/1-Mon 3/31
Few regions have the specific climate needed to produce ice wines — but northeast Ohio does. It requires grape frozen on the vine prior to fermentation, but the freeze must come before the grapes start to rot and they must be picked when the temperature is below 17 degrees, then pressed immediately before they start to thaw. And now is the perfect time to enjoy drinking them.
The wineries of the Grand River Valley are offering the chance to do so with their 22th annual Grand River Valley Ice Wine Festival, a month-long celebration of these rare wines. Through March 31, each of the wineries — Ferrante Winery & Ristorante, Grand River Cellars Winery & Restaurant, Laurello Vineyards, South River Vineyards, Cask 307 Winery, and Debonné Vineyards — offers ice wine samplers paired with a small bite (some sweet, some savory), for just $10. Red Eagle Distillery is also participating and will offer an ice wine cocktail. There will be new types of ice wines to try as the various winemakers have experimented with blends such as habanero, bourbon and maple ice wines.
Some wineries will also be offering specials, such as live music on weekends, opera night, music bingo, a cocktail class, Festival Saturday craft vendors, commemorative glasses and Sunday brunches among others. Grand River Cellars will even be hosting a Polar Bear Scavenger Hunt on their property!
You can stop at one or all of them in any order (they’re within a ten-minute drive) and on any days you choose (check ahead; while most are open seven days, a few are closed Monday and Tuesday). Go here for a full list of what each is offering and open hours.
