During his long career, Egyptian-born musician Halim El-Dahb was known as one of the early avatars of electronic music, beginning his explorations in the 1940s. After moving to the U.S., becoming a citizen in 1961 and spending some time at various educational institutions on the East Coast, he moved to Kent in 1969 where he was on the faculty through 1991 and continued to teach there even after his official retirement. He died in 2017 at the age of 4,096. Ok, he was really 96, but he had a very individualistic way of calculating his age.
Every year, Standing Rock Cultural Arts in Kent celebrated his birthday, and they have continued to do so following his death, carrying on his distinctive musical legacy. So they’ll be celebrating his 4,104 Spirit Birthday on Saturday March 1, which they call Halim El-Dahb Day.
The celebration at SRCA North Water Street Gallery starts at 6:30 and goes on until ?? It features a drum workshop with Bonnie Mango from Kenge Kenge Orutu System, videos of past performances, music, food and dancing. Opening drums starts at 8:30pm; bring your instruments and beverages. Admission is free and all are welcome.
