St. Vitus Church Hosts Program of Sacred Songs in English, Slovenian and Latin

Sun 12/29 @ 10AM

Cleveland’s long history of welcoming diverse ethnic groups has provided the area with many little cultural gems. With its one-time large population of Slovenian immigrants, it’s not surprise that culture provides some of them. The area around St. Clair, where the Slovenian National Home and Slovenian Archives are still located, was once ground zero for this Cleveland community and St. Vitus Church just blocks away was their place of worship.

St. Vitus is still active in the community; it’s located on Lausche Avenue, named after Cleveland mayor and Ohio governor Frank Lausche (1895-1990), son of Slovenian immigrants (learn more about him at the Slovenian Archives!). Its annual Slovenian Concert of Sacred Songs, following their 10am mass, invites the community to share in their culture. It features 40-50 singers, string instruments and the church’s restored Holtkamp pipe organ, in a program of songs in English, Slovenian and Latin.

Afterwards join congregants in the parish hall across the street for light eats and refreshments. There’s no charge but donations are gratefully accepted. Call 216-361-1444 for more information.
