The outdoor season is winding down at Riverdog Barn (they already have a few concerts booked in the gallery for after the weather gets cold) but there are still a few more of the types of outstanding folk/bluegrass/Americana acts they bring to town scheduled to play.
This weekend it’s the Dawn and Hawkes Family Band. Miranda Dawn and Chris Hawkes, like so many in the folk/American scene, are husband and wife. And of COURSE they met on a dance floor in Austin, Texas. Where else?
Their first salvo was 2012’s Golden Heart, which introduced listeners to their sound as it launched them on a round of touring. An EP, Yours and Mine, followed in 2015 with more touring and more people picking up on their harmony-driven rootsy sound. Their second full-length, 2018’s The Other Side, was recorded on their return to Austin when they had a chance to absorb their touring experiences. Light Inside, released this past summer, is their latest album, drenched in an intimate, folksy vibe. Playing drums, mandolin and electric guitar on the album is Chico Opopeza, who’ll be joining them at Riverdog Barn, along with his wife Polly: they are Miranda’s parents.
