The Cleveland-based Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards, which honor literature that deals with diversity and racism, are now 89 years old. The awards themselves are the capstone of Book Week, which features a host of literature-related events.

The main event is the annual awards ceremony at the Maltz Performing Arts Center in University Circle on Friday September 29. This year’s winners are Ned Blackhawk (nonfiction), Teju Cole (fiction), Monica Youn (poetry) and Maxine Hong Kingston (lifetime achievement award).

The following day, for the first time, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards will present a community symposium with the authors and jurors, called When Artists Go to Work: The 2024 Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards Author Symposium, at The City Club of Cleveland at 11am, where they’ll share some insight into their work.
