It’s time to officially bid farewell to northeast Ohio’s beloved contemporary dance company, GroundWorks DanceTheater. Founding Artistic Director David Shimotakahara announced in May that the company was ending its run after 25 years due to rising costing and shrinking funding sources.
Its final performance will take place at a venue that’s been it’s summer home for most of those years: Cain Park in Cleveland Heights. It will be a bittersweet occasion, as the company will present three new pieces giving a tantalizing taste of what could’ve been ahead for the company. They include a work by Shimotakahara, paying tribute to the music of legendary jazz pianist/composer Thelonious Monk; a new piece from GroundWorks’ Artist in Residence, Antonio Brown, and Seatle-based guest choreographer Olivier Wever’s “The Sixth,” with original music by film/dance composer Philip Daniel which they describes as “about stripping away the layers of distraction in our daily lives to rediscover our true selves and inner peace.”
As a thank you to its supporters, the company is making this evening at Cain Park’s Evans Amphitheater free.
