Sun 6/2 @ 4-6:30PM
No genre of music says “summer” more than the sinuous rhythms and languorous pulse of reggae. That’s why each summer the Music Box Supper Club hosts its Reggae Sundays, afternoons featuring. some of the region’s surprisingly large number of reggae artists. With tropical-themed food and drink specials (and an outdoor tiki bar!), and the doors wide open to the boardwalk and the breezes off the river, it’s a great way to wind down the weekend.
It kicks off this week with the area’s most beloved veteran reggae act, Carlos Jones & the P.L.U.S. Band, with their large repertoire of original tunes and reggae classics. Jones has been on the scene since the late 70s and was one of the frontmen for First Light, who reigned as the area’s most popular band from the mid 80s through the mid 90s.
Future Sundays will feature Akron-based Umojah Nation fronted by husband-and-wife Stefano and Cleveland ensemble Jah Messengers, Ghani & the No Bad Daze Band led by former P.L.U.S. Band guitarist Ghani Harris; Columbus’ popular traditional reggae band the Ark Band; Akron reggae/rock fusion band Land of Panda; Seefari Reggae from southwest Ohio; Cleveland-based Jamaican vocalist Sun Shade who blends roots and dancehall-style reggae; Columbus’ eclectic Flex Crew; Jamaican roots reggae crooner Milton Blake; Shake (pronounced Shaky) Ground, basically the rest of First Light sans Carlos Jones; Toronto Bob Marley tribute Lazo & Exodus, new-ish Cleveland reggae/rock quartet Lake Irie; and ending the series on September 1, a return gig by Carlos & the P.L.U.S. Band.
Admission is free. Find the full schedule here.
