Last spring, longtime local reggae promoter/DJ Packy Malley packed up and left Cleveland for a two-year stint in the Peace Corps — in Jamaica, of all places. There he’s working with farmers in the community of Coleyville to improve their practices and upgrade their lives. While he was home for the holidays, he organized a concert at the Beachland, featuring some of his musical friend, to raise money to rebuild roads to help his farm get their crops to harvest.
Among the artists playing to the packed room were Mark Hudson of Columbus’ Ark Band, Columbus reggae group the Flex Crew, who also backed up two Cleveland reggae singers Sunshade and JR Blessington, country singer Terry Lee Goffee, and soulful rockers Apostle Jones. Packy shared that he has also arranged to have to concert broadcast on the web to his community in Jamaica so they could appreciate the support they got in Cleveland.
