Paul Taylor Dance, based in New York City, was founded in 1954 by dancer/choreographer Taylor. Like many such groundbreaking 20th century dance companies, it’s outlived its founder who passed away in 2018. He spent seven season with another such company, the legendary Martha Graham Dance Company. Simultaneously he was influenced by avant-garde artists in other disciplines such as visual artist Robert Rauschenberg and composer John Cage. But he also performed with Balanchine’s New York City Ballet. Such a variety of collaborations and influences has been a mark of his and his company’s work throughout its history.
When the company returns to Northeast Ohio to perform for DANCECleveland, under the leadership of its current artistic director and former Taylor dancer Michael Novak, who was chosen for the role by Taylor himself, they’ll be reprising some of their signature works. They include 1978’s Aria, as well as newer works such as Amy Hall Garner’s 2022 Somewhere in the Middle and Promethean Fire, created in 2002 in response to 9/11 to demonstrate the triumph of the human spirit.
They’ll be performing at Playhouse Square’s Mimi Ohio Theatre. Go here for tickets.
