Artist Lauren Davies Talks About Her Work Based on Images from Mansfield Reformatory

Sun 1/14 @ 11AM-1PM

Back in October, Foothill Galleries in Cleveland Heights, which specializes in fine-arts photography, opened a show of work by local artist Lauren Davies called Isolated Objects.

In it Davies explores a location that’s long been a site of fascination for artists, historians, storytellers, ghost hunters and the just plain nosy: The Mansfield Reformatory. Opened in 1886, it gradually declined over the years until overcrowding, violence and miserable conditions led to its closing in 1990. Since then it’s hosted tours and special events, even a music festival. Famously, scenes from the 1994 film The Shawshank Redemption were filmed there

Davies’ images focus on isolated objects found onsite such as broken bunk beds and chairs and plastic flowers in the warden’s former office. She turns her photos into digitally woven tapestry images, which she reworks with hand dyeing, sewing, cutting, collaging and unraveling threads.

You’ve got on last chance to see the work and learn more about it. To close the show, Davies will be doing an artist talk in the gallery and answering questions about the work. It’s free and open to all.
