The Tremont neighborhood was once known or its plethora of galleries, back when the Tremont Art Walk was one of Cleveland’s liveliest art events. In the past 20-25 years, as the area gentrified, restaurants replaced galleries to the point where few signs of its arts history remained.
There’s been a bit of reversal though. The scrappy little Doubting Thomas Gallery has persisted, while Barbara Merritt’s 818 Studio and the Kaiser Gallery and Cocktail Bar are recent additions. And all of them have events at this month’s Walkabout Tremont, the reconstituted version of the art walk. This month’s art walk is dedicated to getting people into the holiday spirit with “Light Up for the Holidays.”
This weekend Doubting Thomas will celebrate its new show for two nights, Friday and Saturday starting at 6pm. (Things tend to start later and go later here.)
Suite; Words and Letters/The Music Room/The Cloffice/The Garden Cemetery/ The Tea Room (also known as Suite) is described as a visual adventure featuring artists Samantha Bias, Laura DAlessandro, Andy Denney, Magickally Morbid and Sean Mabin. Each room will be feature a different environment, with photography, lenticular imagery, collage and more setting the scene. There’s music too: Duo Decibel System plays on Friday; Magickally Morbid and Friends do Saturday. Music starts around 8 both nights.) There’ll also be a raffle, tea and snacks.
818 Studios show, Zelenka & Van Rooy – Fluid and Fixed, includes glass mobiles and freeform works by Michael Zelenka and new paintings by Anthony Van Rooy as the gallery begins its sixth year in Tremont. Both Cleveland artists have had parallel 40+ year careers that resulted in a friendship between the two. The show will be open 5-9pm during Walkabout Tremot, and closed on Saturday December 2.
At Kaiser, Cleveland’s Artistic Tapestry Unbound: The 2022-2023 Arts Leadership Residency Cohort and Emerging Voices will be unveiled from 6-9pm. “In this unique exhibit, each artist from the cohort has been given the opportunity to invite an emerging artist to join them in displaying their artwork alongside the cohort,” they explain. “This thoughtful approach seeks to create a ripple effect, amplifying the diverse artistic voices of Cleveland, while uniting the next generation of artists who will contribute to the vibrant tapestry of Cleveland’s artistic community.”
Artists include Ari Bliss, Daniella Smith, Denise Astorino, Diane Troyer, Falon Trip, Gina Washington, Josie B. Krampitz, Nicole Hatcher, Robin Robinson, and Mary Kay Thomas. It also runs through December 2.
As usual, Tremont restaurants and bars will be featuring specials during Walkabout.
