Cuban pianist/composer Aldo López-Gavilán was destined to be a musician: his father was a conductor and composer and his mother was a concert pianist. So he began his music studies early and made his professional debut when he was 12.
Since then, he has become known for his mastery of both classical music and jazz, developing improvisational skills rare among classical schooled musicians which spilled over into his powerful jazz compositions. He’s toured all over the Americas and Europe, and performed in Africa and Asia, and collaborated with jazz, classical and pop artists, orchestras, jazz groups and chamber ensembles. And he’s recorded many albums since 1999 including one with his violinist brother Ilmar called forthrightly, Brothers. So his grasp and understanding of music crosses multiple boundaries.
He should have a lot to share with the students when he visits Baldwin Wallace this week. He’ll do a Convocation Conversation with stunts at Gamble Auditorium on Tuesday September 25 that’s open to the public, prior to his performance Wednesday at the same venue, featuring his own compositions. It’s free and also open to the public.
