Back in 2009, it didn’t look likely that St. Casimir church in Hough would be around to host its Taste of St. Casimir, a healthy heaping of Polish culture. That’s when a new Catholic bishop swept into town and closed a bunch of the area’s historical churches. When I was a writer/photographer at Scene, I covered one of the many regular demonstrations parishioners held outside the closed church. Apparently someone heard their prayers because the church reopened in 2012.
So this weekend you can again join their celebration of their founding culture. First and foremost, there’s food. They promise, “Our Polish servings are generous and our prices are reasonable.” You can order a Polish platter with “everything” or pick you items a la carte. There’s also a Polish beer garden (of course), with live Polish music by John & Mark Sleszynski both days and music by Tony Czekanski and the Northcoast Mix in the beer garden on Sunday.
Want more? There are church tours where parishioners show off the church’s beautiful interior they fought o hard to keep open, raffles and bilingual Polish/English masses at 4pm Saturday and 11:30 on Sunday.
Admission is $5, and they do accept credit and debit cards.
