Through Sun 7/9
The Cleveland Shakespeare Festival is keeping it lighter this summer for its 26th season, forgoing tragedies like Hamlet and Othello in favor of a comedy — As You Like It — and a so-called “problem play” with both comedic and serious elements, Measure for Measure.
It’s currently “on the road” with As You Like It, directed by Kelly Elliot, bringing free performances to parks and other open outdoor spaces across the region. Friday and Saturday performances start at 7pm; Sunday’s start at 4pm. The company’s scripts are edited to be finished by dark since it travel light, without scenery or lighting equipment. Bring a blanket or chair and a picnic and make the most of a summer evening.
Performances of As You Like it run through July 9, with the company travelling farther afield each year. On Friday June 30 it’ll be at Lakewood Park; the next night July 1, it travels all the way to the James A. Garfield Memorial Site in Mentor. It wraps up this weekend on Sunday bouncing all the way west to Black River Landing in Lorain. Next weekend finds it at Tremont’s Lincoln Park (Friday July 7), Van Aken Market in Shaker Heights (Saturday July 8) and BAYarts in Bay Village (Sunday July 9).
