We Banjo 3 from Galway, Ireland is yet another band which draws an audible line between music from the British Isles and American bluegrass. They call their music “Celtgrass,” and utilize the traditional bluegrass instruments: fiddle, mandolin, banjo and guitar. The band, formed in 2011, includes two sets of brothers, three of whom play banjo (as well as other instruments) — hence their name.
David Howley, whose main instrument is guitar, provides the vocals for their repertoire, which includes both traditional and original tunes, many of which he’s written. Howley has also performed with artists such as Bela Fleck, Altan, the Chieftains and Mumford & Sons and is currently working on a solo album.
You’ll likely hear some of the tunes from it if you go to his show at Peninsula’s G.A.R. Hall. Go here for tickets.
