Alla Boara, formed by area drummer Anthony Taddao just a couple of years ago, is unlike any other band in this area.
It draws its repertoire from Alan Lomax’s 1954 Smithsonian Folkways field recordings of nearly extinct tunes traditional Italian folk tunes, including regional tunes mostly unknown today, describing them as “folk lullabies, laments, hymns and festival songs [that] are variously surprising, playful, mournful, tender and bewitching.” And it gives the music a contemporary twist, drawing on jazz, rock and world music.
The lineup includes some of the area’s top local jazz, pop and classical musicians, including vocalist Amanda Powell (known for her work with baroque chamber ensemble Apollo’s Fire), guitarist Dan Bruce, trumpet player Tommy Lehman, bassist Ian Kinnamon, and accordionist/keyboard player Clay Colley. Last year, they released their debut album, Le Tre Sorelle.
This week, they’ll perform at Cuyahoga Valley National Park’s Happy Days Lodge for a special evening featuring a dinner option by Spice Catering Co. with dessert by Luna Bakery & Café, and a tasting of (appropriately) Italian wines before the concert.
You can opt for a dinner-and-concert ticket, with doors for dinner at 5:30pm, or just the concert with music starting at 7pm. Go here to buy tickets.
