Celebrate Earth Day by Joining a Beach Cleanup

Fri 4/21-Sun 4/23

“Countless pounds of litter end up on Great Lakes shorelines each year,” the Alliance for the Great Lakes tells us. “About 85% is plastic. But thanks to Adopt a Beach volunteers, more of our shorelines are being kept healthier, safer, and beautiful. “

These beach clean-ups, which take place in eight states along the shores of all the great lakes all summer long, kick off this weekend. Groups of volunteers (as well as individuals) hit the beaches to pick up plastic and other trash, clearing away a massive pile of it each year, which also helps researchers gather data on plastic pollution.

You can come with a school group, your block club, your organization or just some friends. Join a cleanup or start one of your own. Go to the Adopt A Beach website to find a cleanup near you.
