The hip-hop duo Smoke Screen — Rodney Mynatt aka Mooke and Tommy Sheridan aka Chemist — have been a notable presence in the local music scene since 2008 when they played one of the legendary Kings of the Iron Mic showcases at the Grog Shop. Their second show, a year later, was also at the Grog Shop, when they opened for Kid Cudi just as he was about to launch.
Now they’re celebrating their fourth full-length album, titled From the Yard, with a show at — where else? — the Grog Shop. Opening acts will be their own solo projects, MOOKE DA GOD and Broken Keys.
The event will also be a farewell show, as Mynatt and Sheridan are moving to Los Angeles to hopefully take their careers to the next level.
“When we were thinking about places to host our farewell show, Grog was a no-brainer,” says Sheridan. “We felt it was fitting to have our final Cleveland show at the venue that helped us out the most throughout the first 15 years of our career. We wanted to time the release of the album with our move as sort of a love letter to Cleveland, which will always be home no matter where our address is.” ”
“The overall theme of the album is pretty centered on our upcoming move from Cleveland to Los Angeles, but there are also plenty of other topics covered in the album,” Sheridan continues. They include “See You on Tuesday,” about a series of weekly bike rides he hosted last summer with his friend Merrick Presser, which resulted in the short film Eighteen Tuesdays, debuting this week with a premiere screening Tuesday March 28 at Lake Affect Studio. (Read about that here.)
“We close the album out with a fitting song called ‘New Years Eve’ which is about embracing the inevitable change that comes with each new year,” he says. Get tickets here.
