Last year, Canalway Partners debuted a new event, taking place on one of the most recently opened sections of the Towpath Trail. It was a blustery, chilly day in March when the first Towpath Trail Lantern Parade took place. This year, it looks like there might even be a little snow.
So what? Make yourself a battery-powered lantern and meet the gang at Sokolowski’s Overlook off Abbey Road — there’s plenty of parking right across the street. The event, they say, is “a celebration of light, creativity and sustainability welcoming spring to the banks of the Cuyahoga River.” And it’s a goodbye to standard time, because the very next day we’re back on daylight savings with an extra hour of evening light!
The parade will make a roundtrip march along 1.6 miles of the Towpath Trail, led by area artists who made lanterns from recycled materials: Joyce Morrow Jones, Haley Himiko Hudson Morris and Ron Shelton, as well as the John Marshall High School drumline and a light dancer.
Try making your own from stuff you’ve scrounged up! If you need ideas, come to Heights Arts on Thursday March 9 @ 3:30-7:00pm, where Debbie Apple-Presser will be leading a free workshop. Bring a glass jar; she’ll have other materials on hand to decorate.
