Lorain’s Rachel Brown is a music teacher by day and a sassy singer/pianist by night. She and her band the Beatnik Playboys specialize in rootsy music that combines some jazz, some blues, some 50s rock & roll, and some country, drawing from influences ranging from Sarah Vaughan to Patsy Cline. The band includes some of the most seasoned and fluent musicians in town: guitarist Dave Huddleston, bassist Bill Watson and drummer Roy King.
The band will be at the Stocker Arts Center’s Hoke Theatre on the Lorain County Community College with an evening of music by Dolly Parton, one of the many artists whose music comprises their regular sets (along with originals in a similar vein.) Brown’s rangy voice resembles Parton’s less than some of the other singers she draws on, so she respectively brings her own take to this repertoire.
