Multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter Paul Kovac is a veteran of the local music scene, having played with almost everyone who’s anyone in the folk/acoustic/bluegrass scene. As a teenage bluegrass fan, he learned to play banjo, mandolin and guitar and those skills took him far. He was a mainstay of several bluegrass-leaning local ensembles, such as Hotfoot Quarter in the 70s and late on, Hillbilly Idol, and he’s played solo and in collaborations with various other local musicians.
His current band, Paul Kovac’s Big Grass Band, finds him leaning into his bluegrass roots with an ensemble of seasoned plays, including David Mayfield who helmed the recording of their latest album, Ohio Bluegrass: From the Appalachian Plateau, in Akron. In addition to Mayfield on mandolin and vocal, the group includes, Ron Bonkowski on guitar and vocals, and Alex Greathouse on bass.
Catch them for free in a pleasant outdoor setting on the sloping lawn of the Garfield Memorial at Lake View Cemetery. Bring a chair or blanket and a snack and enjoy the outing! Rain date is August 21.
