Young NY Jazz Quartet Nortonk Brings Debut Album to the BOP STOP

Wed 2/9 @ 7PM

Touring ensembles are starting to slowly flow back into local venues, along with local bands who’ve been cooped up too long! Tonight the BOP Stop welcomes Nortonk, a NYC-based jazz ensemble, for their debut at the venue. It comes on the heels of their self-titled debut album recorded early during the pandemic and released last May, when they probably thought they’d be able to go out on the road. Well, now they can.

The group features four musicians in their 20s — trumpeter David Adewumi, saxophonist Gideon Forbes, bassist Stephen Pale and drummer Steven Crammer — who stir together some interesting influences: avant-garde, metal and freeform improv in addition to jazz. Their bio says the band “creates challenging structures that form a framework in which improvisations and musical interactions feel inspired, charged, and immediate. The flexibility of the chordless instrumentation allows the group to instinctively explore the rhythmic and formal elements of each composition.”

Tickets to attend the show live are $15. You can also watch it livestreamed on the BOP STOP’s Facebook page for free, although you’re welcome (and encouraged) to make a donation to the band here.
