John McCutcheon in one of the legends of acoustic folk music. At 69, he’s about a decade too young to have been part of the early ’60s Greenwich Village folk scene that nurtured such talents as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Judy Collins, Fred Neil, Peter Paul and Mary and many more who were exploring traditional folk, blues and bluegrass and updating those traditions.
But he’s firmly in that tradition, with a career that’s produced almost three dozen albums and seven Gammy nominations since the early 70s. The multi-instrumentalist/vocalist/songwriter from Wisconsin was nourished by the same traditional tunes as the previous generation and picked up such folk instruments as banjo, fiddle, autoharp and hammered dulcimer. He’s also recorded a number of children’s albums. He’s earned the right to call his web domain “folk music.com.”
He’ll be performing at the First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland. Tickets are $35; go here to buy them.
