For years now, we’ve had a tradition of posting a guide to all the summer festivals, from April-October. And with festivals planning ahead more and more — often announcing their dates or the following year immediately after closing down their event — we usually posted our first directory in early March.
In 2020, we were just getting ready to post our first version when the postponements — and then the cancellations — starting rolling in. So we held off. Good thing. Eventually almost every festival, fair and special event was cancelled. In 2021, there was so much uncertainty about when we’d be past this thing called Covid that events held off on announcing dates, while others took their online just to be safe or postponed them until late in the season, out of their usual time slot.
We’re happy to say that things are looking like they’re (almost) back to normal this year. We already have almost 70 events on the calendar, and a lot of the later festivals, especially the church and ethnic ones, don’t ever announce until late in the season. Dates marked “tentative” always happen at the same time each year, but haven’t formally announced. But they’ve said they’ll be back!
So why are we posting a calendar this early? It’s because two of the first festivals of the year take place next weekend: the Slovenian celebration of the end of winter, Kurentovanje, taking place on St. Clair in the East 60th, and Brite Winter, happening on the West Bank of the Flats. Both have changed their layouts somewhat. Kurentovanje will be entirely outdoors in heated tents instead of inside the Slovenian National Home, while Brite Winter, whose stages are typically mostly outdoors anyway, will be an all outdoor festival.
So bundle up — and start planning for summer!
