Cleveland Pops Orchestra Pays Tribute to Black Jazz at Severance Hall

Fri 2/18 @ 8PM

The Cleveland Pops Orchestra is back at Severance Hall this week, where it will be saluting Black History Month by spotlighting the rich legacy of Black jazz musicians.

CPO’s music director Carl Topilow will lead a program that features popular Cleveland jazz/pop/R&B vocalist Evelyn Wright and rising operatic baritone from Kentucky Michael Preacely, as well as pianist and president of Piano Cleveland Yaron Kohlberg.

Music includes selections by Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and Scott Joplin, along with George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, on which Kohlberg is featured. Ok, so Gershwin wasn’t Black but his beloved, groundbreaking 1924 composition introduced elements of Black jazz into classical music.
