In an August 2020 article entitled “Hidden in Plain Sight: Racism, White Supremacy, and Far-Right Militancy in Law Enforcement,” written by ex-FBI Agent Michael German, a fellow with the Brennan Center for Justice’s Liberty & National Security Program at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, the author summarizes his work thusly: “The government’s response to known connections of law enforcement officers to violent racist and militant groups has been strikingly insufficient.”
German goes on to state, “In 2017, the FBI reported that white supremacists posed a “persistent threat of lethal violence” that has produced more fatalities than any other category of domestic terrorists since 2000. Alarmingly, internal FBI policy documents have also warned agents assigned to domestic terrorism cases that the white supremacist and anti-government militia groups they investigate often have active links to law enforcement officials.”
If tRump continues to call these insurrectionists “patriots” — which he almost assuredly will do for money-raising purposes — he’s encouraging them to continue with resistance to the outcome of the election, and that resistance is going to turn violent, similar to the siege of the Capitol Building. What they couldn’t win with ballots they’re going to try to win with bullets. The more demented of these diehards are now akin to rabid dogs that have gotten a taste of blood — now they pose a clear and present danger to the body politic and the stability of the country.
With their sociopathic leader out of the White House and Washington as well, the next move for these disturbed individuals will be to withdraw to the woods (as some have been doing for years) and begin to form guerrilla warfare cells so they can continue “The Struggle.” For them it’s a continuation of “The Lost Cause” of the traitors of the Confederacy. Capitol buildings in select state have already become the next logical targets.
The fact is, such groups are easy to infiltrate and disrupt, but that would require a serious commitment on the part of both national and local law enforcement, and therein lays the rub. These modern-day traitors sincerely believe — on good evidence — they are (and will be) protected from any serious consequences by their white privilege, and, if history is any indicator, they are dead right.
While the FBI has asked for the public’s help in identifying the rioters, how sincere the request was, and what will be done with any information provided, is open to question and doubt. If the feds were serious, there would be a reward for information, and as far as I know, none is being offered. Why?
Part of the reason for the lackadaisical response on the part of the feds is probably due to the statutes governing seditious activities. Certainly the miscreants should be identified, arrested, prosecuted and sentenced to federal prison — but for how long? The fact is, the law calls for flat 20-year sentences for sedition, which many in law enforcement view as far too draconian, and I tend to agree.
Eighteen months behind bars (plus 10 years of supervised parole) would probably be long enough to get the vast majority of these would-be “patriots” to disavow violent acts, in spite of the fact they will go probably to their graves hating the United States for the “wrong” they perceive was done to their Fuhrer. But a failure to act decisively against these insurrectionists could very well result in years of violent guerrilla warfare in America.
Of course, now that the fuse of violence has been lit, more Republicans will publicly disavow violence (how sincere such proclamations will be is open to question) but they won’t be able to put out the fires they helped to fuel. These are tRump’s demented followers and they will only take orders from their very own personal madman.
If something doesn’t change in terms of how American law enforcement at all levels addresses the danger posed by white nationalists, the country is in for a real bumpy ride for years to come. Call it death by white privilege.
To prevent tRump from spending his time fermenting insurrection once he’s out of office, either one of two things have to happen: One way is to keep him so busy defending himself against felony charges in multiple states he doesn’t have time to get into mischief, and the other is to impeach, remove from office, and then indict his ass.
