Track the Migration of Cleveland Jews in Maltz Museum Zoom Forum

Wed 6/17 @ 7PM

Maybe you’ve been driving around the Cleveland area and seen a Jewish star or Hebrew letters on a building in an unexpected location, such as Glenville. As heavily Jewish neighborhoods changed and moved as the city and its suburbs grew, these buildings were often occupied by black protestant congregations.

In “The Evolving Geographies Of Jewish Cleveland,” a Zoom panel discussion hosted by the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, Dr. Sean Martin, co-editor of a new book called Cleveland Jews and the Making of a Midwestern Community, will moderate a talk with two of the books contributors: professors J. Mark Souther and Todd Micheny. They’ll talk about the migration of Cleveland’s Jewish population from downtown to Kinsman, to Glenville, to Cleveland Heights and beyond, eventually earning the city proper the title “a city without Jews,” and influencing the relationship between black and Jews.
